WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) released the following statement on his vote today in favor of the so-called Blunt amendment, which would amend the health care law to respect the right of health care professionals, insurance providers, and purchasers of insurance not to provide services that they find objectionable:
“Requiring our nation’s religious institutions to defy the basic tenets of their faiths shows a disturbing disregard for the Constitution’s protections of religious freedom.”
The Senate rejected the amendment by a vote of 51-48; 60 votes were required for passage.
