WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senators Bill Frist (R-TN) and Lamar Alexander (R-TN) today applauded the selection of the Bellefonte Nuclear Plant in Northeast Alabama, which is owned and operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority, as one of the two sites selected by NuStart Energy Development LLC to construct a new advanced nuclear power plant. “Investing in domestic nuclear power plants will help produce clean, low-carbon sources of energy that modernize our nation’s electricity grid and break our dependence on foreign oil,” said Frist. “TVA’s highly skilled workforce and proven record of success make it one of the best nuclear power plant operators in the world, and I’m proud that they will continue leading the way in innovating new ways to produce clean and reliable energy.” “If someone favors lower natural gas prices, cleaning up the air, and being more independent of foreign oil, then nuclear power is the best alternative and TVA is at the leading edge of building modern, efficient, and safe nuclear power plants,” said Alexander. Nustart Energy Development LLC, the country’s largest consortium of nuclear power companies, is planning to submit two applications to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for the first construction and operating license of a new advanced nuclear energy plant in 30 years. The Department of Energy’s Nuclear Power 2010 program, which was created to support the design and construction of new advanced nuclear power technologies, is providing 50 percent of the costs necessary to prepare detailed engineering plans
