WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander presented Memphis resident, Samantha Kristen, with the Jefferson Award for outstanding community service at the 2003 American Institute for Public Service Jefferson Awards last night in Washington. The program is sponsored by over 100 local media outlets — television, newspapers and radio stations — which assist in the award selection process. "Samantha is an example of Tennessee's volunteer spirit," Alexander said. "From organizing canned soup drives to collecting clothes for the homeless, Samantha is giving back to the community and I am proud of the work she's doing for Tennessee." Samantha, 16, was nominated by her softball coach for the award and was selected by the program's sponsor in Memphis, The Commercial Appeal. This year marked the Jefferson Award's 31st Anniversary. The awards program honors adult and youth volunteers who strive to make their communities better through active community and public service.
