Statement Sen. Alexander - Steel Tariffs Decision By President Bush

Posted on December 4, 2003

The President's decision to end the steel tariff puts him squarely on the side of the American auto worker. The President's honest effort to help steel workers has been destroying the jobs of auto workers who use steel. In Tennessee, 150,000 or one-third of all our manufacturing jobs are auto jobs. Our state is the fourth largest builder of cars and trucks and has nearly 1,000 auto parts suppliers. The steel tariff has been raising the cost of Tennessee-produced auto parts and shipping our auto jobs overseas where steel can be bought at a global, competitive price.
