George Brown made history in Tennessee. When I appointed him in 1980, he became the first African American to serve on the Tennessee Supreme Court. As the nominee of the Republican Party to continue that service, he ran a strong statewide race carrying a majority of votes in East Tennessee and in Memphis. He has served as circuit judge with distinction. He has been my friend for 30 years, and I wish him the very best in his new endeavors.
