Statement of Sen. Alexander - Five-Year Strategy for President Bush's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief
Posted on February 23, 2004
President Bush and Ambassador Tobias have taken another important step forward today in the global fight against HIV/AIDS. Their strategy emphasizes accountability for achieving clear results. I look forward to working with the administration in implementing this ambitious plan. More than 40 million people are infected with HIV worldwide, 30 million in sub-Saharan Africa. The American commitment under President Bush is by far the largest in the world — $15 billion over five years. I hope other nations will also step up to the plate.
