The United States Senate today announced that Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) has been appointed to its influential Budget Committee for the 109th Congress. In addition, Alexander will continue to serve on the Foreign Relations Committee, the Energy and Natural Resources Committee and the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee. He will also continue to serve as chairman of the Tennessee Valley Authority Congressional Caucus and will serve as a member of the Select Committee on Aging. Subcommittee chairmanships will be announced at a later date. Alexander said about his committee assignments: "With these assignments I can focus on better schools and colleges, clean energy and air, our country's role in the world, keeping federal spending in check and support for our seniors. Specifically, the Energy and Natural Resources Committee has jurisdiction over the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. And the HELP Committee will be especially busy this session reauthorizing Head Start and the Higher Education Act as well as providing oversight for No Child Left Behind."
