Statement Of Sen. Alexander - President Bush's Budget Proposal

Posted on February 7, 2005

This is a tough budget. We're in a time of war, and we have a deficit. The President has given us a budget that requires fiscal discipline. His budget is entitled to respect, and I'm going to give it that respect. I am carefully reviewing the budget. I still have my priorities, and I may have some different ideas than the President. As a new member of the Budget Committee, I'll be more involved in that process. The President is right to try to cut the deficit by almost half over the next three to four years. In areas where there is lower growth in federal spending, I'm going to argue strongly to give states more flexibility on how to spend that money.
