Statement of Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) on Annual March for Life

Cosponsors The Child Custody Protection Act to Safeguard Pregnant Minors and Their Parents

U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) today made the following statement to mark today’s annual March for Life: “I am pro-life. I have a deep and abiding respect for life in all of its forms. I continue to believe what women in crisis need most is our care and support. I support adoption as an alternative to abortion and encourage efforts to make adopting a child easier.” To coincide with this event, Alexander today signed on as a cosponsor of the Child Custody Protection Act. This measure makes it a federal offense to transport a minor across state lines to obtain an abortion if the intent is to circumvent a parental notification or consent law in the state where the minor lives. “I am proud once again to cosponsor this measure to help protect the health and safety of pregnant minors as well as the rights of parents to be involved in the medical decisions of their minor daughters,” Alexander said. Alexander was a cosponsor of the Child Custody Protection Act in the 109th Congress. In July 2006, the Senate voted 65 to 34 to approve the Child Custody Protection Act. The House of Representatives approved similar legislation in September 2006. Despite strong bipartisan support in both chambers, the bill never became law because the Democratic leadership in the Senate refused to allow the two Houses to meet and agree to a final version to send to the President for his signature. ###
