Senator Lamar Alexander Statement on Partial Government Shutdown

Posted on December 22, 2018

WASHINGTON, December 22, 2018 — United States Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today released the following statement on the partial government shutdown:

“There is no excuse for even a short-term, partial government shutdown. Shutting down the government should be as off limits to budget negotiations as chemical weapons are to warfare. I was not for a government shutdown under President Obama. I'm not for a government shutdown under President Trump.

“I was not elected to shut down the government, I was elected to make it work for taxpayers. This is a complete failure of negotiations and a success for no one.”

Lamar Alexander is the senior senator from Tennessee, and he serves as chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, and the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development. For his full biography, click here.
