U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today released the following statement praising the Supreme Court decision that a sweeping ban on handguns in the nation's capital violated the Second Amendment right to bear arms:
“The Supreme Court has correctly decided that Americans have an individual right to keep and bear arms under the Constitution. As a supporter of Second Amendment rights, I believe this decision is key to ensuring that law-abiding residents of the District of Columbia will be able to protect their homes and families from criminals who already have guns.”
Alexander was one of 55 U.S. senators and 250 U.S. representatives who signed an amicus brief to the Supreme Court urging it to overturn the D.C. gun ban in February of this year. Alexander is also a cosponsor of legislation to restore Second Amendment rights in the District of Columbia.
