Posted on September 14, 2006

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) made the following statement today after voting for H.R. 4954, the SAFE Port Act (Security and Accountability For Every Port Act), which passed the Senate unanimously: “Since September 11, 2001, we’ve stopped a number of attacks before they could occur, improved our surveillance system, and have fortunately not suffered a major incident. Today, the United States Senate took another important step toward making our country more secure. The SAFE Port Act increases the number of customs and border patrol agents, improves rail security and aviation security, and sets out a plan for screening cargo entering U.S. seaports – including Memphis, which is the nation's fourth largest inland port.”
