ALEXANDER'S REMARKS ON GENERAL PETRAEUS' IRAQ TESTIMONY

Posted on September 10, 2007

“General Petraeus’ recommendations will take us in a new direction because the troops will be coming out instead of going in, though they will come out more slowly than I had hoped. His report is consistent with the recommendations of the bipartisan Baker-Hamilton Iraq Study Group, but updated and on Petraeus’ timetable. That means a strategy that moves us from combat to support with a long-term but diminishing military presence and places a new focus on diplomacy. It sounds like a new mission to me, but I need to hear more from the general tomorrow and from the President to know if this sets us on a truly new path.”
