U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), co-chair of the TVA Congressional Caucus, today made the following statement regarding the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) announcement that it will increase efforts to prevent future threats to human health and the environment from coal ash waste disposal. The agency’s plan includes measures to gather critical coal ash impoundment information from electrical utilities nationwide, conduct on-site assessments to determine structural integrity and vulnerabilities, order cleanup and repairs where needed, and develop new regulations for future safety.
“As requested by the EPA, TVA should help the entire nation improve how it deals with coal ash waste and learn from its own mistakes. TVA should be a national leader in technological innovation, low-cost power, and environmental stewardship.”
