U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, issued the following statement after participating in an hour-long discussion on the state of the economy with Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke this afternoon. “This is a very serious, very unpleasant problem to deal with. But we must act next week to solve this situation. And the solution must be big enough and clean enough to create confidence in the American financial system, so that mortgages, car loans, money market accounts, retirement savings, and jobs are secure.” Alexander is the third-ranking Republican in the United States Senate.
