WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-TN) made the following statement today after voting for S. J. Res. 12, the Flag Protection Amendment, which would authorize Congress to prohibit the physical desecration of the flag of the United States: “Our flag was protected until 1989 when five Supreme Court justices decided to permit flag burning as a political statement. That is why I support giving Congress the power to protect the flag from desecration. The American flag is one of our greatest symbols of national unity and it deserves to be respected as such.” By one vote, the Flag Protection Amendment failed to get the two-thirds majority of the Senate as required by the Constitution. ###
