Alexander Statement on Alcoa Announcement

Posted on January 5, 2012

U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today released the following statement on Alcoa’s announcement that it will close its smelting plant in Alcoa, Tennessee:

“We Blount Countians know how important Alcoa has been for good jobs, good schools and strong communities for nearly a century. As much as I regret the closing of the smelting plant, this decision can also open a new chapter of the Alcoa story that attracts new jobs to its Blount County site. It is hard to imagine a more attractive location than the Knoxville area – three minutes from the airport at the end of the Oak Ridge Corridor. And that new chapter begins with the nearly 1,600 Alcoa employees who work and live in Blount County, Knoxville, and Morristown and who are not affected by the smelting plant closing.”
