U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today released the following statement regarding his vote in support of the Nelson-Hatch amendment to block the health care reform bill from using federal funds for abortions: “Congress has long protected Americans from being forced to fund abortions directly or indirectly through their tax dollars, and I’m disappointed that today the Senate voted to end that longstanding protection.” The amendment was tabled, or defeated, in a largely party-line vote of 54 to 45.
