WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today issued the following statement on his vote for legislation expressing the sense of the Senate that Congress should pass, and the states agree to, a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution:
“Amending the Constitution to require a balanced federal budget would force an answer to the question: ‘Whose grandchildren are we going to force to pay for all this spending?’”
The amendment, which was offered by Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah), was not agreed to, by a vote of 58 to 40. Sixty votes were required for passage.
