Alexander Votes to Extend Unemployment Benefits

Says Republican Bill Would Extend Benefits Without Adding to the Debt

Posted on July 21, 2010

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today released the following statement regarding his vote in favor of Senator Scott Brown’s (R-Mass.) amendment that would extend unemployment benefits without adding to the already alarming national debt:

“This is the fourth time I have voted to extend unemployment benefits without adding to the debt, and for the fourth time the Democrats have said no.  The Democratic majority seems unwilling to make tough spending choices and would rather add to the huge debt we’re going to pass on to our children and grandchildren.”

The measure failed by a vote of 42 to 56.
