Alexander on Supporting Boehner Debt Plan: “This is a Vote to Reduce Our Spending and Honor Our Obligations”
Posted on July 29, 2011
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, tonight released the following statement on his vote against shelving the debt plan passed today by the House of Representatives:
“We have said from the beginning that we need to make significant reductions in spending and honor the government’s financial obligations, and for the second time the House has given us a reasonable way to achieve both of those objectives.”
In a floor speech earlier today, Alexander said: “I hope the spirit of today, tomorrow, and Sunday is that we spend less time plotting about how we can defeat each other's proposals as quickly as possible and more time working together to come up with ways to reduce spending and honor our obligations.”
The transcript and video of his floor speech is available HERE.
