U.S. Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker made the following statements today following Governor Phil Bredesen’s announcement that Major General Gus L. Hargett, Jr., will retire December 31, 2009, as Tennessee's Adjutant General to become president of the National Guard Association of the United States on January 1, 2010.
“Gus Hargett personifies the volunteer spirit and has been a professional, effective, and strong leader for the Guard’s men and women who have been called to serve our country in unprecedented numbers,” Alexander said. “He is a superb choice as the next president of the National Guard Association of the United States.”
“This is a tremendous honor for General Hargett, and while I hate to see him leave Tennessee, I know he will be an invaluable asset to the National Guard Association and a tireless and effective advocate for the men and women of our Army and Air National Guard,” Corker said. “I thank General Hargett for his outstanding service and dedication to the Tennessee National Guard and know that he will carry that same strong leadership to the national level.”
