Says “Americans are tired of Washington adding to our already-alarming debt”

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, released the following statement after the Department of Treasury reported the national debt surpassed $13 trillion for the first time in our nation’s history:

“The United States’ total debt reached $13 trillion, which means we’re racing past a yellow flag toward a large red flag that’s waving in the wind and says, ‘Stop the train before you run off the fiscal cliff.’ The Democratic Congress seems to be totally unaware of this big red flag and this fiscal cliff toward which we’re headed, which means November’s election might be the only way to settle the differences between Democrats and Republicans. Americans are tired of Washington adding to our already-alarming debt and will be looking to elect Republicans to put a check and a balance on a runaway Washington government.”
