WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today issued the following statement in commemoration of Memorial Day:
"On Memorial Day every year, we remember fallen heroes from every generation who have fought since our nation’s founding to defend our freedoms and our way of life. As we honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, we should also be mindful of the hundreds of thousands of Americans serving in the Armed Forces overseas today – including over 18,000 men and women of the Tennessee Guard, and thousands of other Tennesseans on active duty and in the Reserves, who have served this country courageously since 9/11."
Today, Sen. Alexander joined Mike Kennedy, Commander of Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Chapter 76, and Tony Joyce and Charles Staley of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Chapter 10855, in laying a wreath at the Blount County courthouse in his hometown Maryville, in honor of servicemen and women who have fallen in the line of duty.
