“Since the end of World War II, the United States has always stood against aggressive acts by totalitarian leaders.” – Lamar Alexander

WASHINGTON, March 24 – U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today released the following statement on his vote in favor of legislation to provide financial assistance to Ukraine:

“Since the end of World War II, the United States has always stood against aggressive acts by totalitarian leaders,” Alexander said. “Providing financial support to the Ukrainian people demonstrates the support of the United States and sends an important signal to bullies like Vladimir Putin about the importance of a free, secure and open Europe.”

The legislation would provide up to $1 billion in loan guarantees and $150 million in direct aid to Ukraine and the surrounding region following the Russian invasion of the Crimean Peninsula. The legislation, which Senator Corker helped negotiate in his role as Ranking Member, or lead Republican, on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, also includes reforms to the International Monetary Fund that would help maintain the stability of developing countries, global markets and U.S. security interests.
