WASHINGTON, February 13 — United States Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today released the following statement on his vote to confirm Dr. David Shulkin to serve as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs:
“Dr. Shulkin is an accomplished physician who has been serving as the Under Secretary for Health for the Department of Veterans Affairs and is uniquely qualified to lead an organization tasked with ensuring that our nation’s veterans – including more than 500,000 Tennesseans – receive the benefits and health care services they have earned and so desperately need."
In September 2016, Alexander voted for the FY17 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Bill which provided $74.4 billion in discretionary funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs to support veterans programs and $103.9 billion in mandatory funding for veteran compensation programs and pensions.
