Alexander to President Obama: Premiums Will Rise Under Democratic Health Bill

Posted on February 25, 2010

WASHINGTON – During the White House Summit on health care this morning, Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, and President Obama disagreed as to whether the Democratic health care bill would cause premiums to rise.  This afternoon, Senator Alexander sent the President the attached letter explaining why premiums will increase, citing outside analysis of the Democratic bill.

Senator Alexander also said, “BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee, which covers about one-third of Tennessee’s individual market, has commissioned a study which estimates that premiums for those individuals will increase by 30-45 percent under the Senate bill.”
