Alexander on Amendment to Prohibit Earmarks

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) said the following about his vote against an amendment to the STOCK Act, proposed by Senators Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) and Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.), that would permanently prohibit the congressionally directed funding known as “earmarks”:

“I support the current two-year moratorium on earmarks while we clean up abuses, but my job under the Constitution is not just to give Tennesseans President Obama’s telephone number when they want to know what I’m going to do about repairing the Center Hill dam before the next Nashville flood, building barracks at Ft. Campbell before the troops come home, and repairing the Chickamauga Lock before it closes.”
