Alexander Says Reid Chose to “Load Up Defense Bill with Extraneous Ideas”

Posted on September 21, 2010

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today released the following statement on his vote against moving S. 3454, the Defense Authorization bill, to the Senate floor for debate:

“I’m disappointed that Sen. Reid has chosen to load up this defense bill with all sorts of extraneous ideas. This bill is supposed to be about supporting our fighting men and women during a time of war.”

Senator Harry Reid (D-Nev.) attempted to bring the Defense Authorization bill to the floor with the announced intention to “fill the amendment tree,” a process in which a senator fills all available bill amendment slots, blocking other senators from offering any other amendment without his consent.
