Alexander Celebrates Opening of Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today released the following statement on the opening of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial on the Washington Mall in Washington, D.C.:

“When this monument to Martin Luther King Jr. is dedicated on Sunday, it will mark 48 years since that historic August day when Dr. King stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and declared that our nation would, with faith, ‘be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope.’ I was a young man in the crowd that day, so it’s with fond memories that I celebrate this testament to a remarkable man who believed in our nation’s ability to hew stones of hope, and who was, himself, hope’s sharpest chisel.”
