Alexander Statement on Vote Against Gas Tax Increase

Posted on June 10, 2008

Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today released the following statement after he voted against bringing a bill before the Senate that would raise gas taxes and encourage lawsuits as a solution to high gas prices. The bill does not promote exploration for American energy or development of clean energy technologies. “The solution to our energy problems is not higher gas taxes and more lawsuits. This bill would lead to more taxes and more lawsuits while doing nothing to promote exploration for more American energy and clean energy technologies. Instead of this legislation, Congress should support energy exploration and a new Manhattan Project for clean energy independence to help families struggling with high gas prices.” The motion to proceed to S. 3044 received 51 votes. Under Senate rules, 60 votes were required. ###
