Alexander Statement on Petraeus, Odierno Confirmations

U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, today released the following statement on the Senate confirmation of General David Petraeus to serve as commander of U.S. Central Command, and of Lieutenant General Raymond Odierno to replace Petraeus as the top U.S. commander in Iraq: “Tennesseans know General Petraeus as the commander of the 101st Airborne Division and as a patriot. His excellent leadership put us on a new path toward a successful and honorable end to the Iraq war. This promotion is the next logical step for a soldier who has served his country for 30 years – spending the last several years mostly in Iraq away from his family – so that the rest of us can live better lives here in the United States. Petraeus’ top deputy in Baghdad, General Odierno, is the right choice to ensure continuity in our efforts toward a successful end to the war in Iraq. I’m pleased the Senate has overwhelmingly voted to confirm these two American patriots, and our thoughts and prayers are with them and all our men and women in uniform who put their lives on the line every day.” ###
