Alexander, Corker Comment on TVA Decision to Finish Bellefonte Nuclear Plant

Posted on August 18, 2011

WASHINGTON – Tennessee’s Republican U.S. Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker today released the following statements on TVA’s decision to move forward with construction of a nuclear reactor at its Bellefonte Nuclear Plant:

Alexander: “If we want clean air and low-cost, reliable electricity to attract jobs and power homes, then nuclear power is essential to TVA’s future. We should continue to take every prudent step to maintain safety at our reactors, recognizing that nuclear power has one of the best safety records of any form of energy production: no one has ever died as the result of an accident at a U.S. commercial reactor, and no one was even hurt at Three Mile Island, the best-known U.S. nuclear accident.”

Corker: “I applaud the board’s decision today and am proud TVA is contributing to the expansion of nuclear power in this country and strengthening our base load power in the valley. As we seek clean, safe, cost-effective and reliable sources of domestic energy, ensuring that nuclear is a significant part of the equation is just common sense.”
