WASHINGTON, January 24—Senate health committee Chairman Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today released the following statement on his vote to confirm Alex Azar to serve as United States Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services:

“Alex Azar has served as HHS General Counsel and Deputy Secretary and led one of the country’s major pharmaceutical companies—he has the broad perspective necessary to address the opioid crisis, implement the 21st Century Cures Act that Leader McConnell called the ‘most important piece of legislation’ of the last Congress, and help provide relief for the 9 million Americans who are getting hammered by skyrocketing insurance premiums in the individual health insurance market.”

As chairman of the Senate health committee, Alexander chaired a hearing on Alex Azar’s nomination on November 29, 2017.
