As commander of the 101st Airborne and the general who led our effort to train the Iraqi military, General Petraeus proved to be one of the Army’s most innovative leaders. He’s the right man to lead us in transferring more responsibility to Iraqi security forces. General Petraeus was confirmed by a vote of 81-0. General David H. Petraeus was the first commander of the Multi-National Security Transition Command – Iraq, which he led from June 2004 to September 2005, and then commanded NATO Training Mission – Iraq from October 2004 to September 2005. Prior to that deployment, he commanded the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), leading the “Screaming Eagles” in combat during the first year of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
