HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today visited TVA’s Browns Ferry nuclear plant with Chairman Greg Jaczko of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), the agency in charge of assuring the safety of the nation's nuclear plants. Earlier this year, Senator Alexander visited TVA’s Watts Bar plant near Spring City, Tenn., which is the only new nuclear plant under construction in the U.S.

Of today’s visit, Alexander said, "TVA's goal is to lead the nation in new nuclear energy, which is good for our region because nuclear energy is emissions-free and provides the kind of low-cost, reliable electricity that helps create jobs. But it's also important that TVA has the goal of leading the nation in the operation of safe nuclear plants."

Alexander added: "During last spring's violent tornados, the safety systems at Browns Ferry worked as they were supposed to work – shutting down the reactors, and using backup generators to cool the reactors for five days."
