Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) Statement on the President’s National Parks Proposal

Posted on February 5, 2007

“The President deserves an A+ for his national parks proposal. This is a very big idea. It would provide $100 million per year for operations and maintenance of the 390 parks across the country and up to $100 million more in matching funds if private groups invest in our parks. “The Great Smoky Mountains National Park itself was a gift from the people of North Carolina and Tennessee. The Friends of the Smokies and others continue that philanthropic tradition, so the Smokies should benefit greatly from the proposed Centennial Challenge Initiative. As a member of the Interior Appropriations Subcommittee, I will do all I can to see that this proposal is implemented.”
