Alexander Votes to Prevent Trying Cases Against Enemy Combatants in Civilian Courts

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today released the following statement about his vote in support of an amendment introduced by Senator Kelly Ayotte  (R-N.H.) that would prohibit the use of funds for the prosecution of enemy combatants in Article III courts:
 
“Federal prosecutors must make a distinction between a kid who breaks into a sandwich shop in Detroit and a Nigerian terrorist who wants to blow up an airplane flying into Detroit. Foreign terrorists should be tried by military commissions, which Congress has addressed to ensure that they would be fair.
