Alexander Statement on Senate Passage of “Cash for Clunkers”

U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today made the following statement regarding his vote in favor of H.R. 3435, the Consumer Assistance to Recycle and Save (CARS) Program, also known as the “cash for clunkers” program. The bill passed in the Senate, 60-37: “This program obviously stimulates the economy, and the money to pay for it comes from the earlier stimulus bill that isn’t working. It is especially important in Tennessee where one out of every three manufacturing jobs is auto-related. I strongly oppose any effort now or in the future to pay for ‘cash for clunkers’ by adding to the debt.”
