“I support the bipartisan Iraq Study Group recommendations which would set us on a course the get out of the combat business and into the business of supporting, training, and equipping Iraqi forces. But instead of following that path, the Democratic leadership is again trying to saddle General Petraeus and our soldiers with an arbitrary deadline set in Washington. I won’t support those deadlines which are really designed to satisfy left-wing interest groups instead of coming to a responsible conclusion about how to finish the job in Iraq.” Wisconsin Democratic Senator Russ Feingold’s amendment to H.R. 1585, the Defense Authorization Act, would have set a deadline for withdrawal of U. S. Armed Forces in Iraq. Senator Feingold’s amendment was defeated 70 to 28. The amendment required 60 votes for approval.
