Statement of U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander Recognizing the One Year Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina

Posted on August 29, 2006

“Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with those who are still working to rebuild their homes, their communities and their lives a year after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast. I’ve been proud of the many Americans and Tennesseans who have given their time and their money to aid in the rebuilding efforts. “Congress has enacted more than $122 billion to help victims in the Gulf Coast. In the past year, I’ve focused my efforts and my visits on rebuilding and transforming the New Orleans school system. I believe the city of New Orleans has an opportunity, because of the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina, to start from scratch and create one of the best public school systems in America. This school year begins with the promise of a brighter future for New Orleans students, and I’ll continue doing what I can to see that the promise is met.”
