Alexander Statement on Fort Campbell Troop Deployment to West Africa

Posted on September 30, 2014

KNOXVILLE, Sept. 30 - U.S Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), after a briefing on the first confirmed U.S. Ebola case by Dr. Tom Frieden, Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, released the following statement about the announced deployment of 700 Fort Campbell troops to West Africa:

“The Ebola epidemic in Africa is potentially as dangerous to the United States as the Islamic State in the Middle East. As we've been reminded today, American cities are only one plane flight away from these infected countries. An out-of-control epidemic in Africa could devastate entire countries, potentially creating new safe havens for terrorists. The United States knows how to protect our health care workers who are controlling the epidemic and the Fort Campbell troops who are providing logistical support.”
