NASHVILLE, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) - Tennessee U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander is touting a new health care plan from the Trump administration. The plan could affect thousands of Tennesseans.
The former Governor and now U.S. Senator says the Trump health care plan will be announced soon.
“President Trump and the Labor Secretary Acosta will announce in the next two weeks some good news for Tennesseans who have been having a hard time affording health insurance,” said Sen. Alexander.
While not the plan Alexander pushed over the last year in the health committee he chairs, the Senator says the Trump administration proposal would allow self-employed people to band together under new rules for what's called an Association Health Plan.
“And then go the insurance company and get the same tax advantages that employees of big companies do,” said Sen. Alexander. “This should give thousands of Tennesseans who right now have a hard time affording insurance because they pay for it themselves and they don't get any subsidy a chance to be able to afford health insurance.”
The Senator estimates the Association health plans for those who are self-employed might save $5,000 a year from what they pay now, and the plan would protect those with pre-existing medical conditions.
The Senator estimates that along with thousands helped in Tennessee, 2-3 million nationwide might be helped by the new health care plan.
