Alexander Says Nat’l Mediation Board “Overstepped Its Bounds,” Calls on Congress to Immediately Overrule Board’s Decision

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) today released the following statement on his vote in support of S.J. Res. 30, a resolution he cosponsored expressing the Senate’s disapproval of a labor rule change made by the National Mediation Board. The Board, which oversees labor relations for the airline and railroad industries, changed a rule requiring the consent of a majority of a company’s total workers in a given field to determine its union status to require only a majority of those workers present for the vote.
“The National Mediation Board has overstepped its bounds and overturned 75 years of labor law by declaring that a minority of workers can force a majority to be organized as a union. This is not a decision the board has the authority to make and it should be overruled by Congress immediately.”
The measure failed by a vote of 43-56.
